In September 2020, three CPI cities in North Sumatra had inflation, namely Sibolga by 0.29 percent, Pematangsiantar at 0.29 percent; and Gunung Sitoli by 1.00 percent. Meanwhile, two other cities, namely Medan deflation at 0.05 percent; and Padangsidimpuan with 0.12 percent deflation. Thus, the combined 5 CPI cities in North Sumatra in September 2020 had a deflation of 0.01 percent.
In September 2020, Medan recorded a deflation of 0.05 percent or a decrease in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 102.76 in August 2020 to 102.71 in September 2020. Deflation occurred due to a decrease in prices shown, namely the food, beverage, and tobacco 0.03 percent; clothing and footwear group by 0.09 percent; transportation group of 0.30 percent; and personal care and other services group of 0.55 percent. Expenditure groups that experienced an increase in index were the equipment, equipment and household routine maintenance group by 0.10 percent; the health group by 0.19 percent; and the food and beverage / restaurant supply group by 0.09 percent. The other four groups that did not experience a change in index were the housing, water, electricity, and household fuels group; information, communication and financial services group; recreational, sports, and cultural groups; and education groups.
The main commodities contributing to deflation during September 2020 in Medan include air transport, bird's eye chilies, eggs, perfume, oranges, potatoes, and men's jeans.
Of the 24 CPI cities on the island of Sumatra, 13 cities recorded inflation. The highest inflation was in Gunung Sitoli at 1.00 percent with a CPI of 104.96 and the lowest was in Pekanbaru at 0.01 percent with a CPI of 103.44
