In July 2020, all CPI cities in
North Sumatra were deflationed, namely Sibolga by 0.31 percent; Pematangsiantar
by 0.76 percent; Medan by 0.21 percent; Padangsidimpuan by 0.25 percent; and
Gunung Sitoli by 0.01 percent. Thus, the combined 5 CPI cities in North Sumatra
in July 2020 deflation was 0.25 percent.
In July 2020, Medan recorded a deflation
of 0.21 percent or a decline in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 102.94 in
June 2020 to 102.72 in July 2020. Deflation occurred due to a decline in prices
indicated, namely the food, beverage group , and tobacco by 0.93 percent;
transportation group by 1.60 percent; and information, communication and
financial services by 0.04 percent. The expenditure group that experienced an
increase in index was the clothing and footwear group by 0,64 percent; housing,
water, electricity and household fuel by 0.11 percent; household appliances,
equipment and routine maintenance by 0.45 percent; health group of 0.10
percent; the food and beverage / restaurant supply group by 0.94 percent; and
personal care and other services by 1.57 percent. While the recreation, sports,
and cultural groups and education groups did not experience changes in the
index.
The main contributors to
deflation during July 2020 in Medan include red onion, air transportation,
broiler chicken, garlic, wet shrimp, mustard greens, and coconut.
Out of 24 CPI cities on Sumatra
Island, 19 cities recorded deflation. The highest deflation in Pematang Siantar
was 0.76 percent with CPI of 102.39 and the lowest in Gunung Sitoli was 0.01
percent with CPI of 103.29
