• In May 2019, all CPI cities in North Sumatra were inflation, namely Sibolga by 0.67 percent; Pematangsiantar of 0.67 percent; Medan at 1.33 percent; and Padangsidimpuan by 0.27 percent.
• Accordingly, the combined 4 CPI cities in North Sumatra in May 2019 were inflation of 1.19 percent. In May 2019, the Medan inflation was 1.33 percent or an increase in the index from 140.66 in April 2019 to 142.53 in May 2019. Inflation occurred because of an increase in prices indicated by an increase in the index of most expenditure groups, namely groups food ingredients by 4.79 percent; processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group by 0.30 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group by 0.22 percent; clothing group by 0.21 percent; health group by 0.10 percent; and the transportation, communication and financial services group by 0.23 percent. Meanwhile, the education, recreation and sports group showed a decline in index of 0.01 percent.
• The main commodities contributing to inflation during May 2019 in Medan include red chili, garlic, rice, wages for domestic help, broiler meat, potatoes, and dencis.
• Out of the 23 CPI cities in Sumatra, all cities recorded inflation. The highest inflation occurred in Pangkal Pinang at 1.78 percent with CPI of 144.79 and the lowest occurred in Tanjung Pandan at 0.21 percent with CPI of 146.27.
