Abstract

Ø In February 2018, all CPI cities in North Sumatra experienced deflation, namely Sibolga at 0.50 percent; Pematangsiantar of 0.58 percent; Medan by 0.96 percent; and Padangsidangkan by 0.58 percent. Thus, North Sumatra in February 2018 experienced deflation of 0.89 percent.
Ø In February 2018, Medan deflation was 0.96 percent or there was a decrease in index from 138.14 in January 2018 to 136.82 in February 2018. Deflation occurred due to price decline indicated by the decline in index of two expenditure groups, foodstuff by 4.05 percent and transportation, communication and financial services group by 0.29 percent. Meanwhile, the group that experienced an increase in index, namely the group of finished food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco by 0.56 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel by 0.11 percent; clothing group by 0.63 percent; health group by 0.06 percent; education, recreation and sports group by 0.01 percent.
Ø The main commodities contributed to deflation during February 2018 in Medan, including red pepper, air transport, chicken meat, cayenne pepper, dencis, onion and green mustard greens.
Ø Of the 23 CPI cities on the island of Sumatra, 20 cities experienced deflation. The highest deflation occurred in Medan of 0.96 percent with the CPI of 136.82 and the lowest occurring in Lubuklinggau at 0.02 percent with CPI 129.79
