The economy of Sumatera Utara, measured by Gross Regional Domestic
Product (GRDP) at constant 2010 prices, grew by 5.12 percent in 2017,
slightly slower than in 2016, which grew by 5.18 percent.

Based on the production approach, electricity and gas procurement is
the highest growth business field by 8.72 percent in 2017. The high
growth of the business field is mainly supported by the high growth of
city gas. Other business fields experiencing relatively high growth,
especially Information and Communication of 8.57 percent; and health
services and social activities of 7.64 percent. Meanwhile, the business
field experienced the lowest growth, namely: financial services and
insurance grew by 0.49 percent and manufacturing industry by 2.31
percent.

Based on the expenditure approach, the components that experienced
relatively high growth in 2017 were primarily: imports grew by 6.65
percent, exports grew by 6.34 percent as well as Gross Fixed Capital
Formation (PMTB) grew by 5.91 percent.

The economy of Sumatera Utara in the fourth quarter of 2017 compared to
the fourth quarter of 2016 (year on year) grew by 5.56 percent.

When compared to the third quarter of 2017 (q-to-q) the economy of
Sumatera Utara in the fourth quarter of 2017 grew 0.37 percent.

The structure of the North Sumatra economy in 2017 is dominated by
agricultural business by 21.41 percent, followed by the Manufacturing
Industry by 20.29 percent and the Big and Retail Trade, Repair of Cars
and Motorcycles by 17.92 percent.

Based on the GRDP at current prices, Sumatera Utara contributes to the
economy in Sumatra Island of 22.84 percent slightly below Riau Province.
Based on the 2010 constant price, in 2017, Sumatera Utara Province
gives the largest contribution to PDRB in Sumatera Island, which is
22.85 percent.
