KEPPAS March 17th 2025: Understanding Dalihan Na Tolu & the Kinship System of the Batak People

March 17, 2025 | Other Activities

On Monday, March 17, 2025, BPS Dairi once again held KEPPAS (Kegiatan Positif Pagi Senin) with an engaging theme: Dalihan Na Tolu in the Life of the Batak People. In this session, two speakers, Jaksen Lingga and Zunkifli Siahaan, shared insights into Dalihan Na Tolu, the fundamental kinship system of the Batak Toba culture. They explained how the balance of its three main elements—Hula-hula (the wife-giving party), Dongan Sabutuha (same-clan relatives), and Boru (the wife-receiving party)—serves as a crucial foundation in Batak social life.

Furthermore, the discussion, moderated by Emmi Manurung, also explored similar kinship systems in other Batak subgroups. A comparable concept exists in Karo culture, known as Rakut Sitelu, which regulates relationships among Kalimbubu, Senina, and Anak Beru. In Pakpak culture, this system is called Sulang Silima, which comprises five key elements in their social structure. Additionally, kinship systems based on balance and mutual support can be found in Simalungun culture with Tolu Sahundulan, Sihal Sihadatu, as well as in Mandailing and Angkola cultures, which recognize the relationships of Mora, Kahanggi, and Anak Boru.

The Head of BPS Dairi actively participated in the discussion and expressed appreciation for the speakers, highlighting that this cultural topic is rarely discussed in KEPPAS. In his remarks, he emphasized that the Batak kinship system is not merely a set of customary rules but also a reflection of essential social values, such as mutual cooperation, balance, and respect in community life. It is hoped that by understanding this concept, BPS Dairi employees can enrich their cultural literacy and contribute to preserving local traditions and wisdom.

KEPPAS is more than just a discussion—it is a platform to broaden knowledge and strengthen our cultural heritage! Stay tuned for KEPPAS BPS Dairi for more inspiration and knowledge every week!
